Los Debutantes

“A cleverly constructed gangster trilogy… Chilean debutant Waissbluth reveals himself to be an energetic and effective narrator who manages to capture beautifully the raw energy of the young ‘survivors’ in the hackneyed criminal milieu."
- Rotterdam International Film Festival

Told from three points of view, this raw and violent tale of sex and duplicity represents an exciting debut for Chilean director Andrés Waissbluth.

Described as raw and Tarrantino-esque, the youthful innovation of new Chilean cinema is much in evidence in this explosive drama about two brothers embroiled in a seedy underworld of sex, drugs and violence. Starring award-winning Chilean actor Alejandro Trejo, Los Debutantes is one of the largest grossing films in Chilean history.

It made its international debut at the Montréal Film Festival to rave reviews.

Twenty-four-year-old Silvio and his 17-year-old brother Victor leave their small town for the big city. To celebrate the younger boy’s birthday, the two go to a strip club and there meet the sultry stripper Graciella, whose whipped cream act captures both their hearts and loins.

After an incident in the club, Silvio is hired by the gangster boss Don Pascual, whose enterprises include porn theatres, strip clubs and prostitution rings.

The naïve young Victor begins to court Graciella, unaware that she is playing it hot and heavy with both her brother and Don Pascual. This cleverly constructed story unfolds through three different points of view – those of the two brothers as well as the femme fatale Graciella. Tensions rise as the brothers realise each other’s duplicity.

Then both are forced to confront the fury of the cuckolded Don Pascual. A fast-moving, erotic, violent tale, announcing the arrival of the Chilean new wave of cinema.
